According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the world's forests are home to 60,000 different tree species, 80 percent of all amphibian species, 75 percent of all bird species and 68 percent of all mammal species.
Forests provide oxygen, protect against erosion, store groundwater and remove the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air to build wood. Forests therefore act as a "CO2 sink", which is a blessing because there are far too many sources of CO2 on earth, namely wherever fossil fuels go up in flames. If the forest loses its function as a sink, it too becomes a source of CO2. Once stored, the carbon dioxide ends up back in the atmosphere and further fuels climate change. That is why protecting forests means protecting the climate.
With these connections in mind, the United Nations has declared the current decade the Decade of Ecosystem Restoration. Forests and other vital natural areas are to be protected, restored or newly created. At the World Climate Conference in Egypt in November 2022, the EU and 26 countries decided to provide 16 billion dollars for forest protection and reforestation.
